5 Quick Points - (Sharks v Broncos, Bulldogs v Warriors, Rabbitohs v Tigers)

Cronulla Sharks 18 v Brisbane Broncos 26 @ Shark Park

1. The Broncos are the masters of coming out of the blocks well to start a season under Wayne Bennett. They know they need a fast start as Origin takes a toll on them during the middle of the year. They were both physical and sharp with the football and deserved their win.

2. Darius Boyd had an excellent first game at Captain for the Broncos. He looked dangerous, was very talkative and energetic and cleaned up a number of dangerous situations. He will be hard to displace as Queensland's fullback.

3. Cronulla debutant Jayden Brailey looks an excellent prospect at hooker. I thought the best feature of his game was how hard he hit in defence and the physicality he showed. His attack will improve in time.

4. I thought it was a worry some of the soft tries conceded by the Sharks in this game. Whilst they had their moments, I didn't see the same physicality and desperation in defence which served them so well last season. The broncos first attack resulted in a simple try.

5. Luke Lewis is one of these ageing marvels. Much like Corey Parker, he appears to be playing  better and better as the years roll on. He looked very dangerous, ran some great lines out in the back row and also played extremely physically in defence. He was one of the Sharks' best.

Canterbury Bulldogs 6 v Melbourne Storm 12 @ Belmore

1. The Storm has now won every Round 1 game since 2001. If I had known that before tipping against them I would have thought twice. However, it shows you their pre-seasons under Craig Bellamy are always on point, and this team is always prepared for kickoff..

2. Storm debutant, Ryley Jacks, had a very solid debut game coming in at five eight at short notice. It's amazing how Craig Bellamy gets no name players and can get them to slot into a system and seam like seasoned First graders.

3. The Bulldogs will really be rueing that opening 10 minutes. They let in 12 really soft points and, on a wet track and in atrocious conditions, that 12 points may as well have been 30 against a side like the Storm.

4. The Bulldogs dominated most of the final 60 minutes laying siege to the Melbourne line, playing with plenty of aggression and powering their way through the middle. Their forwards played with a chip on their shoulder which I enjoyed.

5. Canterbury still have to sort out their attacking kicking game and their spine need to be more assertive and creative in the red zone. They had plenty of opportunities in this game, however conjured little when it mattered just like 2016.

South Sydney Rabbitohs 18 v Wests Tigers 34 @ ANZ Stadium

1. Wests Tigers' fullback James Tedesco showed why he is the best fullback in the game and a certainty to wear the NSW Number 1, if fit. The try he scored in a tight space was brilliant for his footwork and his power.

2. The Wests Tigers were not one of the most impressive teams of the week, mainly because they fell off too many tackles and still looked all at sea on the edges in particular. Too many poor reads and simple missed tackles will expose them further against stronger sides. To concede 4 tries against this Souths side is a worry.

3. South Sydney were soft in the forwards and really lacked support for Sam Burgess. I thought they lacked physicality and their defence around the ruck was extremely poor. Very worrying signs. I think th likes of John Sutton are going through the motions.

4. Luke Kelly and Cody Walker are not a halves combination that will serve Souths well whilst Adam Renolds is out based on what they served up here. Souths looked slow, confused and all over the shop, especially late in the tackle count and with their kicking game.

5. The sight of Greg Inglis hobbling around for an hour without being able to run was embarrassing enough. When we found out the next day he was out for 6 months, it made it an even shoddier look for Souths and was terrible news for Inglis.
